MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department will be starting new sessions of tennis lessons for children in July.
Session 1 will be July 5-14, with July 8 as the make-up for July 4; session 2 is July 18-28. Both sessions will run Monday through Thursday for two weeks. Lessons will be at Recreation Park at a cost of $25 for a resident or $35 for a non-resident.
The lessons will be modeled after the USTA Quickstart program, which encourages teaching correct form and playing matches on smaller courts. Lessons for participants entering first through fourth grades will be from 8 to 9 a.m., entering fifth through eighth grades from 9 to 10 a.m., "hitting lessons" for ninth through 12th grades from 10 to 11 a.m. and "singles and doubles" for entering ninth through 12th grades from 11 a.m. to noon.
A high school girls camp for players who want to improve their ability in doubles and singles matches is also at Rec Park for girls entering eighth through 12th grades. Each day will include practice on one drill meant to improve match play. The rest of the classes will be spent playing matches with a coach instructing throughout. Classes are from 3 to 5 p.m. July 25-28 with a cost of $20 for a resident and $30 for a nonresident.
Co-ed tennis leagues are being offered for eighth through 12th grade girls and boys on Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. June 27 through July 20 at Recreation Park. (There will be no tennis on July 4.) The cost is $15 for a resident and $25 for a nonresident.
Tennis rackets will be supplied, or participants may use their own racket. Register for these classes online at www.cityofmonroe.org or at the Monroe Parks and Recreation office in the lower level of City Hall, 1110 18th Ave. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Contact the office with additional questions at 608-329-2460.
There will be two tennis tournaments next month: singles on July 9 and 10 and doubles July 30 and 31. Both tournaments will be at Rec Park. The fee is $12 per person or $7 for those 14 and younger. Call Brad Saugstad at 608-558-7666 to register.
