Tables turned in 4-3 victory

FORT ATKINSON - The past two years, the Monroe Cheesemakers have lost to Fort Atkinson in very close matches.

On Tuesday, the Cheesemakers turned the tables on the Blackhawks with a 4-3 victory in a Badger South Conference match.

The No.1 singles match between Monroe senior Kristin McArdle and Fort Atkinson's Lexie Weigand set the tone for the entire match as McArdle fought through a three-hour, three-set match to win 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5. The Cheesemakers also captured two more singles matches. At No. 2 singles, junior Ellie Shuda topped Katie McCarthy, 6-3, 6-3; while at No. 3 singles, junior Lily Piewe defeated Courtney Jacobson, 6-3, 6-0. In the No. 4 singles match, Briana Jackson of Fort Atkinson won over Monroe senior Alyssa Quinn, 6-0, 6-3.

Monroe's No. 1 doubles team of senior Kelsey Erickson and junior Brooke McBain were winners over the Blackhawks' Ellery Barrow and Rhea Bradley, 6-2, 6-2. The No. 2 doubles team of senior Becca Flannery and senior Rachel Thompson dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 match to Fort Atkinson's Mariah Topel and Becky McHenry while the No. 3 doubles team of senior Elisabeth Brunner and freshman Ellie Grossen came up short against Fort Atkinson's Rachel Forseth and Kaissa Power, 7-5, 2-6, 6-0.

"The girls played very hard tonight and competed in many well-fought matches," said Stephanie Miller, Monroe head coach. "This will be an excellent win for the entire team."

Monroe will host Madison Edgewood Thursday.
