MONROE - The members of the Monroe baseball team got their first swings, throws and catches in during the first official practice Monday in the gym at Monroe High School.
Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said it would have been nice to have been outside, but the field isn't ready yet even with the 64 degree day.
"It's still very soft," Huffman said of the baseball diamond at the high school. "We didn't want to get it all torn up for our first game March 28. Our kids were not ready to go outside and make those longer throws. We want to make sure their arms are in shape, and we don't have any arm problems."
The Cheesemakers did various throwing, hitting and fielding drills. They used the batting cages for batting practice, did some speed and agility drills and lifted weights.
"As a team we are still a little rusty," Monroe senior Hogan Edwards said. "We are still getting back into the swing of things. If we put in the work and keep working hard as a team I feel like we can prosper."
Huffman divided every boy out for baseball into four groups with seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshman mixed in.
"We want the seniors to be the leaders and mentors," Huffman said.
Monroe has just one week to get ready for the season opener against Edgerton in Monroe on March 28.
"You just want to take them back to the basics and refresh their memories of the previous baseball they have played," Huffman said. "It's impossible to be 100 percent prepared for the first game. You just try to get as close as you can, go out there and see what they look like."
