MONROE - Platteville's Sweedish exchange student Henrick Klerfelt scored a goal in the 56th minute to hand the Cheesemakers a 1-0 loss Thursday at Honey Creek Park.
"Platteville always brings their 'A' game with them when they come to play us," said Tony Stamm, Monroe coach. "I think we are one of their big challenges. This one hurt being a Division 2 team for our seeding."
Monroe (2-4-1) squandered several second half scoring opportunities.
"We outplayed them in both halves," Stamm said. "The score doesn't reflect that. We have to put it in the back of the net to make it count. We had the opportunities. We just have to finish them."
Monroe senior Kelli Isaj headed a shot on the goal at 41 minutes, 36 seconds and a Platteville player hit him right above the lip.
Stamm said Isaj had several teeth knocked loose.
Isaj left the game and came back in moments later to finish the game.
"He really wanted to finish the game," Stamm said.
Monroe freshman Blake Duffy just missed scoring in the 45th minute. Platteville didn't have many scoring opportunities, but the Hillmen made them count. Kerfelt scored his goal on a through ball at 55:36.
"I figured that was how they were going to score," Stamm said. "They were just kicking the ball, bouncing it in front of the goal and hoping for a lucky bounce."
Isaj had a shot ricochet off the top cross bar in the 66th minute. He had another shot sail just wide of the far post in the 68th minute as the Cheesemakers played a frantic final 10 minutes pressing the issue on offense.
"We are going to work at shooting under pressure," Stamm said. "We are better than that."
