MADISON - Junior Hogan Edwards hit a go-ahead RBI single to right field in the top of the seventh inning to propel the Monroe High School baseball team to a 5-4 win over Madison Edgewood on Monday at Warner Park.
Monroe improved to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the Badger South.
"It's been about four years since we have beat Edgewood at Warner Park," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "It's a big win for the program. We haven't beat Edgewood much lately."
Monroe will play at Milton today and is just one game out of first place in the conference.
"If we continue to win games we will be right there in the conference chase," Huffman said. "Any time you put yourself in that position it's a good position to be in."
Monroe senior Garrett Gogin went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and one RBI. Edwards finished 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Cheesemakers and Crusaders were tied at 3 going into the seventh inning. Gogin led off the seventh with a walk. He then stole second base and took third on a wild pitch. Edwards knocked him in with a single to give Monroe a 4-3 lead. Edwards later stole second to move into scoring position. Junior Isaac Allen reached on an error and Edwards scored a critical insurance run.
Monroe's Brad Ripp pitched five innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked three.
"He started out wild but pitched out of a jam in the first inning, giving up only one run," Huffman said. "After that he was around the plate and pitched to contact, and the defense made plays. It was probably our best defensive game all year."
Junior Hunter Weckerly pitched two innings in relief to get the win. He gave up one earned run on two hits. He struck out three and walked one.
