SUN PRAIRIE - The Monroe girls soccer team faced a challenge in the season opener, losing to Big Eight power Sun Prairie 6-0 Thursday.
Monroe senior goalkeeper Gewndolyn Ambrose had nine saves.
For six freshman for the Cheesemakers, it marked their first varsity game.
"We have a very young team," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "I think they realize we have to step up to a whole different level. For some of the freshmen, it was baptism by fire. In the beginning, I think we were just overwhelmed by their speed and skill. They settled in and I like what I saw.
"Sun Prairie is a Division 1 and we are Division 3 and it's a big difference. I don't think the score reflected how well we played."
Monroe will host Lodi at 5 p.m. April 10 at Honey Creek Park. The Cheesemakers are looking to develop as a team with a lot of new faces.
"In every position we have players who have not played together," O'Neill said. "I was really happy with how they came back and played."
