Sugar River soccer rolls in opener

DODGEVILLE - Sugar River freshman Kendall Goecke scored two goals to help lift the Raiders to a season-opening 6-0 win over Dodgeville on Tuesday.

Goecke scored her first goal on an assist from sophomore Sierra Watrud at 12 minutes, 54 seconds. Junior Karly Andersen scored at 23:31 to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead at the half.

Junior Kaitlin Jennrich scored a goal at 55:20 and Goecke scored her second goal about five minutes later. Sophomore Many Sargent scored a goal on a pass from Shelby Hubbard and Elle Joseph scored on an assist from Audrey McGowan at 72:33.

BASEBALL

Belleville 6, Monticello 0

BELLEVILLE - Belleville scored six runs in the third inning to account for all the scoring in the non-conference game.

Belleville's Jared Rear was dominant on the mound and at the plate. Rear allowed just one hit and struck out 14 batters while going 2-for-3 with a triple.

Senior pitcher Lukas Kolasch, who along with three Monticello (0-3) teammates had just returned from a band trip to Memphis, Tenn., walked two and had 10 strikeouts.

McFarland 17, Brodhead-Juda 8

McFARLAND - The Spartans scored five runs in the second inning and added seven runs in the sixth in Rock Valley South Conference action.

Senior Tate Harnack smacked a home run while going 2-for-3 for the Cardinals.

Softball

Fennimore 10, Darlington 8

DARLINGTON - The Darlington Redbirds rallied late but came up short in a Southwest Wisconsin Activities League game.

Trailing 10-4 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Redbirds struck for four runs before the rally ended.

Junior Cassidy Cox went 2-for-4 with a home run and junior Anna Fitzsimons was 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Redbirds.

Senior pitcher Laura Steiner went the distance for Darlington with three walks and seven strikeouts.
