MARSHALL - How long can one school dominate as Capitol South Conference track champions?
The Sugar River boys track team has been doing it for 13 years in a row. The Sugar River girls track has a string of nine straight titles, too.
The Raiders kept their streaks alive by claiming the boys and girls titles in the Capitol South Conference meet Tuesday.
The Sugar River boys tallied 125 points behind the long-distance running of junior Ryan McCoy, who captured the 800 meters (2:01.12), the 1,600 (4:40.42), and the 3,200 (9:57.87).
Senior Jon Beckman took first in the 110 hurdles in 16.35 seconds and sophomore Kelvin Johnson handled the 300 low hurdles in 41.64 seconds.
The Raiders' 400 relay team of Ethan Gassman, Cody Bigler, Jim Chenoweth, and Alex Gocht took first with a time of 46.90.
Sugar River had another conference champion relay team as the 3,200 unit of Riley Miller, Tucker McMahon, Alexander Yeiser and Wesley Morgan finished first in 8:37.96.
The Raiders took the top two places in the triple jump as sophomore Garrison Woods was first (43-5 1/2) and freshman Ethan Gassman was second (40 feet-3 1/2).
The Sugar River girls team took the conference championship by racking up 130 points.
Junior Madeline Brunner won three individual events to lead the Raiders. She first in the 800 (2:29.35), the 1,600 (5:50.54) and the long jump (15-11).
Senior Lou Ann Judd was second behind Brunner in the 1,600, then won the 3,200 in 12:24.77.
Junior Emily Diaz topped the field in the 100 hurdles in 16.80.
The Raiders had two first-place finishes in the relays. The 800 team of Harley Hollis, Samantha Stecha, Ashley Clark, and Alexis Hanson grabbed first in 1:52.98. The other relay win came in the 3,200 as Judd, Brunner, Katie Schmitz, and Amanda Kaiser took the conference crown in 10:56.90.
In addition to Brunner's long jump victory, the Raiders had first-place finishers in two other field events. Junior Sabrina Popenfus won the high jump (4-10) and Stecha took home first place in the triple jump (32-1 3/4).
Sugar River coach Dan Schettler was proud of what his teams accomplished, but had his sights set on what will follow.
"We'll rest up for a day and get ready to hit it hard again," said Schettler, whose team will host the regionals on Monday.
