NEW GLARUS - The Sugar River Raiders improved their record to 6-0-1 on the season with a 2-0 shutout of Columbus Monday.
Julia McNamer gave Sugar River a 1-0 lead on a goal off of an assist from Aimee Sies in the 34th minute. In the 60th minute, Kalin O'Rourke made it 2-0 after another Sies assist.
The Raiders went into the match as the No. 8 team in the state in Division 3 girls soccer after the new Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association released their updated rankings Monday. It was the same ranking Sugar River had a week ago.
The lone tie for the Raiders came against fifth-ranked Mount Horeb in their last game. Mount Horeb held off the Raiders in the sectional semifinal a season ago 1-0.
Tonight, Sugar River travels to fellow unbeaten Lodi (5-0) for a fight for the top spot in the Capitol standings.
Both teams have played Lakeside Lutheran and Evansville, with Sugar River winning both matchups 5-1 and 1-0, while Lodi defeated both squads 10-0 and 4-2.
Elsewhere in the rankings, Madison Edgewood is No. 3 in Division 3 while Oregon is ranked No. 5 and Milton 10th.
