Sugar River boys, girls track teams take second

DEERFIELD - Sugar River junior Garrison Woods won both the long jump and triple jump to help the Raiders boys track team to a second-place finish at the Deerfield Classic Friday, May 3.

Woods finished first in the long jump with a jump of 21 feet, 1 inch and won the triple jump (44-1). Marshall outdueled Sugar River for the team title 122.5-96.5. Darlington took third (84.5) and Albany was 10th (33.5) out of 13 teams.

In the girls' meet, Lake Mills edged Sugar River 91-89.5 and Darlington was third (80). Albany took 10th (25) out of 13 teams.

"You go to any meet hoping to win," Sugar River coach Dan Schettler said. "I knew we had a really good shot with both of those."

The Raiders were running without senior Ryan McCoy, who has a lower leg injury.

"We are not running him until regionals," Schettler said. "That is the soonest he will run."

Darlington junior Tyson Miehe took first in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 25.70 seconds and he won the 3,200 (9:31.51). The Redbirds had a 1-2 finish in the 3,200 with senior Garth Garrsion taking second place (10:08.45).

Albany senior Jose Ramirez finished first in the 800 (2:00.99 seconds). Darlington's Quinn Cullen took second (2:02.49) and Sugar River's Alexander Yeiser was third (2:04.70). Yeiser added a second-place finish in the 1,600 (4:43.72) and Albany's Aaron Johnson was third (4:51.59). Albany sophomore Brennan Bloedel finished third in the 3,200 (10:16.24.)

"Alexander has really stepped in to fill that void without Ryan running," Schettler said. "He's been really steady for us."

Sugar River junior Kelvin Johnson won the 300 hurdles (49.95) and Darlington junior Kyle Johnson took second in the 110 hurdles (:42.70). Sugar River junior Mitchell DeLorme finished third in the high jump (5-10) and Darlington's Ethan Glendenning was fourth (5-8). Sugar River junior Craig Thompson took third in the shot put (44-7).

The Redbirds won the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:32.79. The Comets took second in the 3,200 relay (8:42.12). The Raiders took third in the 400 relay (:46.43) and third in the 3,200 relay (8:44,32).

In the girls' competition, Sugar River's Alexis Hanson finished second in the 100 (:13.28) and second in the 200 (:27.06). Teammate Madeline Brunner took second in the 1,600 (5:26.92) and Sam Barr finished second in the 3,200 (12:45.29). Sugar River's Sabrina Popenfus took second in the high jump (4-11).

The Redbirds won three of the four relays. The Raiders won the 800 relay (1:52.11) just ahead of Darlington (1:52.45). Darlington's 400 relay team won with a time of 53.61 seconds. The Redbirds also won the 1,600 relay (4:16.36) and the 3,200 relay (10:44.03).

Darlington senior Cassidy Chambers finished second in the pole vault (8-6) and senior teammate Kelsey Weigel was third in the shot put (30-9 1/2).

Albany's Chantel Rogers finished third in the 400 (1:03.49) and fourth in the high jump (4-8). Junior teammate Bailey Hlavachek took fourth in the 800 (2;29.54) and the 1,600 (5:42.91). Sugar River's Brianne Roska took fourth in the 3,200 (12:55.18).

Sugar River is hosting a meet Tuesday, May 7 against Cambridge with several athletes competing from Pecatonica-Argyle, Monticello and Albany. Sugar River will host the Raider Invite Friday, May 10.
