STOUGHTON - The Monroe-New Glarus girls swimming team had one championship relay team and swam to a fifth-place finish at the Stoughton Relays on Tuesday.

The Cheesemakers' 200-yard butterfly relay team of sophomore Maddie Hammer, sophomore Grace Keith, senior Anna Wolf and senior Abby Oudinot won the race in a time of 1 minute, 59.33 seconds.

The meet featured all of the Badger South Conference teams. Madison Edgewood slipped past McFarland 172-160 to win the team title of the eight-team meet.

"We went into the meet just hoping to score more points than last year," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "Last year we got eighth and scored 58 points. This year we scored 88 points and got fifth. I think what they saw is that they can be competitive."

Moser said she expected the butterfly relay to finish third.

"I have a lot of girls that are stronger in the butterfly than in the past," she said. "I was surprised that we won. We haven't won a relay there in several years. It was a wonderful thing to watch. It was just unbelievable."

The Cheesemakers had three other relay teams finish in the top four.

In the 400 medley relay in which each swimmer was required to swim a 100 IM, Monroe's team of Oudinot, Wolf, Keith and Hammer placed third (4:36.14).

In the 400 medley relay that consisted of a 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and freestyle, the Cheesemakers' team of junior Skylar Lassen, Hammer, Keith and senior Anna Meritt finished fourth (4:28.82).

Wolf and Oudinot teamed with seniors Alyssa Sinkule and Grace Moehn to claim fourth place in the 100 freestyle relay (56.64), which required each swimmer to swim a 25 freestyle.

"That is one relay I only let seniors swim," Moser said. "It's their reward for all of their hard work."
