OREGON - The Monroe Lady Cheesemakers finished in fifth place at the Badger South Conference cross country meet Saturday with 93 total points.
"It was an interesting day. The weather was perfect, the ground was a bit soggy in some spots, and the girls responded in a couple different ways," Monroe head coach Brian Jefferson said.
Tess Seichter finished in seventh place overall with a time of 16 minutes, 1 second, earning first-team all-conference honors. Molly Hlubek (16:38, 13th place) and Rachel Rogerson (16:41, 15th place) each earned second-team all-conference marks.
"To have three all-conference performers is very exciting, especially after not having one last year," Jefferson said.
Tessa Frutiger finished fourth for Monroe and 25th overall at 17:09 and Stephanie Wyss (17:23, 33rd place) gave Monroe the final time it needed.
"It was awesome to see Steph Wyss have the race she had. This is only her fourth race of the season and she is looking great," Jefferson said.
Wyss edged teammates Summer Bertalot (17:24), Abbey Schneider (17:25), and Michelle Wiesenberg (17:26) for the final varsity time.
"To have all of our eight varsity girls run under 17:30 is quite a feat," Jefferson said. "No other Badger Conference school did that. We were the only team. We talk about how important every runner is and our six through eight runners did a good job of staying focused."
Monroe had hoped for a fourth-place finish or better.
"The girls did what they thought they could, so in a way you really can't ask for more, and as you can tell it was a close race," Jefferson said. "I think they have a feeling in their gut that they have something to prove going into next weekend's sectional meet."
Fort Atkinson won Saturday's meet with 43 points. Monroe's junior-varsity team finished third. Monroe will run Saturday in Platteville at the state sectional.
