MONROE - In their last home dual, the Monroe girls tennis team took two of four single matches and swept three doubles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over Sauk Prairie Tuesday.
Monroe coach Brad Saugstad was glad to end the home schedule on a high note.
"This was a nice home dual match for us to end the season with," Saugstad said.
At No. 1 singles Sauk Prairie's Sashia Glueck defeated Monroe's Macayla Quinn 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Monroe's Alisa Fager defeated Caitlyn Lovelace 7-6 (2), 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Monroe's Sarah Wong defeated Stephanie Frey 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4. At No. 4 singles, Sauk Prairie's Laura Soter defeated Sarah Sabatke 6-0, 6-2.
Saugstad said the success at singles was a key to the victory.
"Anytime we get two singles wins, I always feel confident about us being able to win the match as a team," he said. "Alisa Fager and Sarah Wong both played nice matches tonight to allow us to split the singles matches. Both players worked hard and improved as the match went on."
The Cheesemakers dominated the doubles matches.
Monroe's No. 1 duo of Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire defeated Avery Bannan and Kaitlyn Brattset 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Allie Coplien and Chelsea Miller defeated Ali Schwarz and Georgia Breunig 7-6, 6-3. At No. 3 doubles, Erin Gellings and Paige Prien defeated Michaela Pfeiffer-Munlit and Abby Liverseed 6-1, 6-0.
Saugstad said he was pleased with the doubles teams, especially Gellings and Prien who were fresh off a third-place finish at the Badger Conference tennis tournament Saturday.
"Erin Gellings and Paige Prien continued their good play from this weekend and cruised to an easy victory," Saugstad said. "Allie Coplien and Chelsea Miller started off playing very well, then had a 20-minute delay in their match. They lost some momentum after that, but did a nice job of winning a close match."
Even with the win at No. 1 doubles, Saugstad said Grossen and McGuire - who also finished third at the conference tournament - need to work on getting off the court with the win quicker.
"They really need to work on finishing off these winnable matches in two sets," he said. "Letting your opponent hang around and stay in the match is a really bad habit to get into."
It was also senior night Tuesday, so the team honored its lone senior member, Macayla Quinn.
"I wished she could have won on senior night," Saugstad said. "But her current career record is 34-30, and I hope she can add another win to that record at subsectionals on Monday."
