Stoughton shuts down Avalanche

MONROE - Stoughton's Justin Gibbons scored four goals to power the Vikings to a 9-0 win over the Monroe boys hockey co-op Friday at SLICE.

With the loss, the Monroe Avalanche drops to 1-16, 0-9 Badger South.

Stoughton scored three goals in the first period to jump out to an early lead. Gibbons scored his first goal on an assist by Jeff Huston at the 9-minute, 50-second mark in the first period. Stoughton's Zeth Zeichert then scored a power-play goal on a pass from Quinn Link less than two minutes later to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Gibbons scored his second goal at the 3-minute mark toe extend the Vikings' lead to 3-0.

Stoughton's Brody Hlavacek also scored two goals. The Vikings opened up the lead by adding two goals in the second period. Both Gibbons and Hlavacek had second-period goals to extend the Vikings' lead to 5-0.

The Vikings put the game away with four goals in the third period. The Avalanche outshot the Vikings 36-35. Monroe freshman goalie Heath Bear had 16 saves and Dan Guilliams had 10 saves as goalie.

The Vikings had five penalities compared to the Avalache which had one.

Monroe will play at Beloit Memorial on Tuesday. The Avalanche have two more home games. Monroe will host Viroqua at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 4 and host Greendale at 5 p.m. Feb. 11. Regional tournament play begins Feb. 14.
