MONROE - The Cheesemakers are still searching for their first Badger South win after being swept at home by Stoughton on Tuesday, 25-18, 25-15, 25-11.

"It's frustrating, but we go into every game as if we're going to get it (the win)," said junior setter Heather Barta.

Despite a decent start, Monroe lost its way more and more as the night went on.

"We didn't have confidence tonight. Something wasn't there," senior Gracie Schilt said. "We have to work together and we're just not doing that right now."

Playing without third-year middle blocker Becca Armstrong who was sidelined with an injury, the Cheesemakers tried but failed to stop the strong net play of Stoughton's Rachell Ott and Alexis Krause. Ott finished the night with an astonishing 20 kills and 12 digs, while Krause had five blocks.

"We didn't do a good job of (defending) it," Schilt said of Stoughton's offensive attack. "We have to watch her hands and see how (Ott) moves to hit the ball. We didn't do that well. She read us well and hit us all over the place."

Barta added that even without Armstrong, a junior who stands about 6 feet tall, the team still feels as if it can play at a high level.

"We can do it without her, we just have to prove it," said Barta, who led Monroe with 13 assists.

Monroe opened the first set with some strong play, holding a four-point lead at one point and held the advantage as late as 16-15. But from that moment, Stoughton rolled.

"We have to put the pieces together," Barta said. "It's frustrating. We have the pieces to the puzzle, but we can't do it."

Without Armstrong at the net, Monroe's offense failed to deliver much of a punch. Sophomore Taylor Barrett led the Cheesemakers with six kills and two blocks.

"She's still there," Schilt said of Armstrong. "Just because she's not on the court doesn't mean anything. She's still there backing us up 100 percent. We have good players in every position."

Monroe (0-8), which travels to Milton on Thursday, has just four more chances to pick up that ever-elusive first conference win, including home dates with Monona Grove and Oregon.

"It's never awesome to lose, but at Oregon (Sept. 15), that game was awesome. We played awesome. I wish every game we played like that," said Barta, who led Monroe with 13 assists.
