Steiner fifth in national tourney

CHAUTAUQUA - Mitchell Steiner finished in fifth place at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III national men's golf championship Friday.

Steiner, a 2016 Argyle High School graduate who just completed his freshman year at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore, finished the tournament at 7-over-par 295 after wrapping up the final of four rounds at the Chautauqua Country Club in Chautauqua, New York.

Steiner finished 13 strokes behind repeat national champion Dante Migliore of Mohawk Valley Community College.

After two rounds of the national championships, Steiner was in first place at 4-under-par 140. Steiner opened with a 4-under-par 68. He then shot an even par 72. Steiner made 12 birdies over his first 36 holes.

After shooting a 3-over-par 75 in the third round, Steiner was still in contention for the national title, just five shots behind Migliore. In the final round, Steiner struggled, shooting an 8-over-par 80.
