CHIPPEWA FALLS - The Monroe Youth Hockey Squirts (9- and 10-year-olds) came home with the second-place trophy after winning two of three games in the 10-team Chippewa Falls Squirt B Tournament last weekend.
In the opening game Saturday morning, the Avalanche Squirts took a 2-0 lead into the third period after an unassisted goal by Tyler Johnson and a goal by Jacob Ritschard on an assist from Johnson.
Fox Valley attacked in the third period, tying the score on two goals within a 45-second span. Monroe responded with a goal from Johnson, unassisted, with just over five minutes to play. Monroe's defense stiffened to preserve the 3-2 victory behind 13 saves from goalie Kobe Manor.
Monroe next faced Cottage Grove, Minn., in a Saturday night game. Cammi Ganshert put Monroe on the board with an unassisted goal late in the first period to tie the score at 1-1.
The Avalanche came on strong in the second, outscoring Cottage Grove 3-0 with unassisted goals by Trenten Prien and Tyler Johnson and one by Jacob Ritschard on an assist from Johnson. Cottage Grove kept it interesting by opening the third period with two quick goals, but the Monroe defense again stiffened and the Avalanche held on for the 4-3 win.
Kobe Manor recorded six saves in goal and Monroe killed nine penalties during the game without giving up a goal, including two 5-on-3 situations.
In the tournament championship finale Sunday afternoon, Monroe was outmatched by a talented team from Pequot Lakes, Minn.
The eventual champions scored their first goal fifteen seconds into the game and never let up, taking a 10-0 lead into the third period.
Monroe's Jamaar Manor kept Monroe from being shut out with an unassisted goal with 5 minutes remaining in the game. His brother, Kobe, recorded 30 saves in goal for Monroe.
In the trophy ceremony that followed, each of Monroe's players received an individual medal, and the second-place trophy was presented to coach Tom Ganshert and assistant coach Bill Pickett.
