MONROE - The Monroe Avalanche youth hockey teams continued their season this past weekend with a flurry of action.
Mites (8U)
The Avalanche hosted Verona, McFarland and Oregon.
In the first game, Clayton Downs put on the goalie equipment to guard the net for Monroe.
In the second game, Jaxson Daughenbaugh took over to deny goals for the Avalanche.
In the third game, Lane Schilt suited up to stop pucks at the net.
Mite players worked together and passed the puck for several scores throughout the three games.
On Friday, the Mites had the opportunity to play against the Monroe Blues at intermission. The Mites easily defeated the Monroe Blues.
Squirt B (10U)
Squirt B had two wins over the weekend. The first one was a 7-4 win at home against the Patriots.
The Avalanche took the lead early, scoring two goals in the first period by Owen Hicks and Garrison Lemak, assisted by Hicks.
In the second period, the Avalanche scored four more goals against the Patriots. Two goals apiece were scored by Logan Keleher and Tre Dammen. Assisting were Jackson Trupke and Hicks. The Avalanche finished up the game with a single goal scored by Keleher in the third period, completing his first hat trick of the season. Satchel Moorman had 22 saves at the net.
On Sunday, the Avalanche traveled to McFarland and won 4-3.
Hicks put one on the board early in the first period for the Avalanche. Dammen added another point in the second period. Then two goals were scored in the third period by Keleher and Lemak. Moorman had 27 saves.
Pee Wee A (12U)
The Pee Wee A team was in Waupun this past weekend at the 2018 Waupun Warrior Squirt A/PeeWee A Invitational. Their first game was at 8 p.m. Friday against Elmbrook U12A Division 1 team in which Monroe lost 9-4.
The Avalanche had a slow start but got rolling after the first period; however, it was not enough.
The first goal scored by the Avalanche was Cash Anderson with an assist from Wyatt Janecke. Janecke then proceeded to get a hat trick all unassisted and earned himself a patch for the weekend.
Miles Gordon had 43 saves in goal.
The following afternoon, the Avalanche lost to Waukesha 6-3. The game was close until the third period, with the defense having a strong showing.
With the score 5-3, Monroe pulled the goalie trying to get the game within reach, but Waukesha scored on an empty net.
Scoring for the Avalanche was Janecke, Evan Brendemuehl and Cameron Newcomer with Brendemuehl adding an assist.
Miles Gordon had 33 saves.
In the final game of the weekend on Sunday against Waupaca, the Avalanche led the game until the third period and fell 4-3.
Scoring for the Avalanche was Janecke with two goals, one unassisted and one assisted by Carson Buholzer. The other goal was scored by Anderson with an assist from Janecke. Gordon had 31 saves.
Pee Wee B (12U)
The Pee Wee B Avalanche team had a doubleheader on Saturday, starting with an early morning game in Middleton, taking on the 2007 AAA Capitols.
The quick and talented Capitols had the advantage in fresh legs for a morning game, and the Avalanche had a tough time getting it out of their zone, eventually losing 5-2.
The Avalanche scored on goals by Payton Hathaway and Easton Dreyfus, assisted by Hathaway, but the Capitols outshot the Avalanche 38-15, scoring twice on power plays. Goalie Xander Obert had 33 saves.
The second game of the day was at home against the Patriot C team from Madison, which resulted in a 7-1 loss.
Hathaway scored early for the Avalanche, but that was the only goal the team would sneak through.
The usually crisp passing was not there, as the Patriots controlled the rest of the game, holding the Avalanche to just four shots on goal in the final period.
Goalie Kyle Theorin had 28 saves.
On a snowy Sunday morning, the Avalanche made the trek back up to Middleton to face off against the Wings but again came up short, 12-2.
The quick Wings kept the vaunted Avalanche offense in check, holding Monroe to just 14 shots on goal. Haden Barker and Jayden Downs each scored goals for Monroe.
Middleton ended up with 46 shots on goal for the game. Goalie Obert had 34 saves.
