Squirts continue strong year

MONROE - The Monroe Avalanche Squirt team (ages 9 and 10) continued their strong play by winning both weekend games.

On Saturday, Monroe defeated Beloit C by a score of 5-1.

Monroe struck first as Riley Jones knocked home a Joe Wyss pass. Beloit tied the game with a goal just as the first period ended. Cade Janecke scored the game-winner midway through the second period as he caught a pass from Emma Ness and beat the Beloit goalie to put Monroe up for good.

Tessa Janecke, Daniel Ward and Wyss added Monroe's final three goals. Wyss and Ness each recorded two assists. Travis Edmunds and Cade Janecke each had one. Monroe outshot Beloit 33-5.

On Sunday, Monroe hosted Oregon and won 6-1. Oregon struck first as they were able to put a rebound shot past Monroe goalie Payton Stauffacher to give them the early lead.

Jamaar Manor scored the next two goals for Monroe to give them the lead. Manor was not done as he added two more goals throughout the course of the game with one coming on a penalty shot.

Wyss and Cade Janecke added Monroe's other two goals. Wyss and Jones each added two assists while Cammi Ganshert, Jared Cline, Connor Nafzger, Ness and Manor each added one.

Stauffacher was solid in goal recording 16 saves. Heath Bear played the final minutes in goal and recorded two saves. With the weekend victories, Monroe's recorded improved to 15-8-2.

On Feb. 5., the Squirts play Reedsburg in Madison. With a victory, the Avalanche would qualify for the state tournament played in March.
