WAUPACA - The Avalanche Squirt A team traveled to Waupaca to play in the 2013 Super Squirt Showdown tournament Feb. 15-17. The eight-team tourney included the Monroe Avalanche, Beloit Blades, Elmbrook Eagles, Wisconsin Rapids Red Raiders, Sauk Prairie Flyers, Marshfield Blades, Stoughton Vikings and Waupaca Comets.

In their first game, the Avalanche defeated the Marshfield Blades 6-2. The Blades took an early 2-0 lead in the first period. With 2:39 left in the first period Alyssa Knauf got a break away and scored the first Avalanche goal, unassisted. The Avalanche went on to score five more unanswered goals. Scoring for the Avalanche were Luke Kuberski, Anika Einbeck (assisted by Knauf), Cade Janecke (assisted by Einbeck), Payton Stauffacher (assisted by Tessa Janecke) and Hayden Roth (short-handed, assisted by Cade Janecke). Goalie Heath Bear recorded 17 saves, and the Avalanche put up 22 shots on goal.

Saturday night the Avalanche defeated the Wisconsin Rapids Red Fliers in overtime, 3-2. The score remained 0-0 at the end of the first period, but the Red Fliers put one on the board in the second period. Knauf, assisted by Tessa Janecke and Einbeck, responded with an Avalanche goal in the second period. Stauffacher then lit the lamp for a second Avalanche goal, but that was answered by the Red Fliers in the third period, with the game ending in a tie. Overtime play was a 5-minute, 4-on-4 sudden death. With 1:11 left on the clock, Kuberski scored on an assist from Knauf, earning the Avalanche a win and a spot in Sunday's championship game against the Waupaca Comets.

The championship game was a heated, back-and-forth battle, and the scored remained 0-0 until the third period. With 3:43 left on the game clock, Kuberski scored the lone Avalanche goal, short-handed on an assist by Cade Janecke. The Avalanche had 18 shots on goal, and Bear earned the shutout, recording 18 saves.

The Avalanche defensive lines, consisting of Stauffacher, Haley Knauf, Roman Bauer, Broc Kuberski and Alex Henry, did a great job keeping the puck away from the Avalanche net in all of the tournament games. Each Avalanche player received a first place medal and the first place trophy to display at SLICE.
