MCFARLAND - The Monroe High School boys soccer team scored first but second-seeded McFarland captured a 5-1 win over the Cheesemakers in a WIAA Division 3 regional championship game Saturday.

Sophomore Nick Schumacher scored a goal on an assist by freshman Aaron Ziolkowski at 2 minutes, 14 seconds to give the Cheesemakers the lead.

"It was a big boost and got the guys fired up," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said.

The Cheesemakers (7-11-1) appeared to have taken a 2-0 lead in the 10th minute. A McFarland defender kicked a shot near the Spartans' goal up and it hit the top cross bar and appeared to cross the goal line.

"We thought it was in," Vasquez said. "I asked the ref, and he said it didn't cross the line completely."

McFarland's Ethan Larsen scored a goal to tie the game at 1 at the half. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead on Nick Hildebrandt's goal at 51:47.

Chase Sonday scored his first goal at 67:03 to extend the Spartans' lead to 3-1. He added a second goal at 72:09. McFarland's Caleb Blair scored a goal at 87:14 to put the game away.

"We knew we had to play our best game," Vasquez said. "We came out and played the best we possibly could. We were in it up until the 70th minute when we gave up three goals late."

McFarland advances and will host Sugar River (13-8-1) in a sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday.
