BRODHEAD - The Brodhead Cardinals were able to turn a first half double-digit deficit into a close game but shooting woes in the fourth quarter sent the Cardinals into a tailspin and resulted in a 76-58 loss to the McFarland Spartans in a Rock Valley Conference crossover game Thursday.
The Spartans grabbed a 24-14 lead after the first quarter, but the Cardinals managed to slow down McFarland in the second quarter and close to within 35-31 at halftime.
Brodhead still trailed 54-47 at the outset of the fourth quarter, but the Spartans went to a zone defense and the Cardinals struggled to shoot over it, scoring just 11 points the rest of the way.
Senior Tate Harnack dropped in 26 points and senior Jesse DeLorme added 11 points to pace the Cardinals. Brodhead (2-2 overall, 2-0 Rock Valley South) will host Evansville in another Rock Valley Conference crossover game Tuesday.
