SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Family matters for Brodhead duo

BRODHEAD - When it comes to no-hitters, particularly one shared by family members, pretty isn't always important.

Brodhead's senior and freshman pitching duo of Erika and Kayla Stampfli combined to hurl a no-no in a non-conference game against Barneveld, even though they had to work around eight errors to achieve the gem.

The Cardinals won the game 8-0.

Seven Cardinals collected a single hit to supply the pop. Kayla, the senior and ace, struck out six over four innings while Erika fanned four over three and issued the tandem's lone walk.

SIX RIVERS EAST

Black Hawk 3, Argyle 2

Janel Rupnow only flinched once, and it came right after her offense allowed her that luxury.

Black Hawk's senior ace fanned three and walked just two over the distance to get a hard-earned victory between early conference frontrunners.

The Warriors struck for three runs in the top of the sixth inning before Argyle answered with two in the bottom half.

Monticello 6, Pecatonica 3

There's nothing better than a pitcher helping herself.

After Ponies senior MacKenzie Hilliard brought home a run with a two-out single in the top of the third, ace Mary Hershberger cracked a 2-run double that staked her to a comfortable 3-0 lead on the pitching plate.

Monticello added a run in the fourth before Pecatonica struck back for three in the bottom half.

Albany 14, Juda 3 (5 innings)

The Comets came out sizzling.

Albany scored six times in the first inning to cruise past flailing Juda on the Comets' home diamond Monday evening.

Three Comets collected multiple hits and ace Tara Walz went the distance, only allowing four hits while her offense supplied 11 in response.

CAPITOL SOUTH

Cambridge 3, New Glarus 0

The scene in Cambridge Monday evening was not unlike the O.K. Corral.

Unfortunately for the Glarner Knights, their sharpshooting ace Keriann Schmidt came up on the short end of a bona fide pitchers' duel with Blue Jays junior Kayla Smithback.

Cambridge managed just two hits and could only scratch across a single run until the sixth inning. Schmidt fanned three and Smithback struck out seven.

SWAL

Iowa-Grant 7, Darlington 2

The Lady Redbirds hung tough momentarily, but the Panthers eventually caught their prey in Darlington Monday evening.

Iowa-Grant led just 1-0 through four innings before hanging back-to-back 3s on the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth to pull away from the Redbirds.
