SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Eagles have answer, Walz dances Comets past Ponies

SOUTH WAYNE - Barneveld's offense, more heavily-relied upon this season than in recent memory, came through with a resounding answer Thursday evening in a 4-3 softball victory over Black Hawk.

After the Warriors rallied to tie the game, 3-3, with all their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Eagles sophomore Courtney Sullivan drove home the winning run in the top of the sixth. Classmate Kelly Mueller made it stick by refusing any more runs in the last two innings.

Black Hawk got an RBI-single from senior Amanda Walker in the fifth before Aryn Wellnitz smacked a 2-run double to knot things up. Senior Janel Rupnow took the loss for Black Hawk, which committed five errors. Three Eagles had multiple hits.

Albany 6, Monticello 1

"Miss" Walz did her skipper Connie Wunschel proud Thursday night.

Albany's affectionately-nicknamed ace only fanned two batters, but walked none in going the distance to defeat the Ponies in a Six Rivers East matchup.

Megan Schulz capped a 4-run top of the sixth with a bases-clearing double, but Monticello ace Mary Hershberger deserved a better fate. Only two of the six runs she surrendered were earned.

In the sixth, that fact became coupled with some loss of location.

"She just sort of lost her control," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said. "We mowed 'em down in the first three innings pretty good."

Hershberger collected three hits in as many at-bats, while Schulz and freshman catcher Hayli Peach both had two hits for the Comets.

Argyle 17, Juda 0 (five innings)

Things got a touch out of hand for the Panthers in the fourth inning Thursday evening.

Argyle erupted for 10 runs in the inning to cruise in the Six Rivers East road game.

Six Orioles collected multiple hits, most notably Kelsey Ostby, who had four. Sierra Granberg took the ball in the stead of Brittany Flannery and struck out 13, while walking seven.

"She wasn't wild, she just put it on them when she needed to," Juda coach Pam Green said.

Rachel Bartels collected the only Panther hit to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

Southwestern 11, Darlington 1

Rebecca Norgard is baffled.

The Lady Redbirds' skipper recognizes that her team is struggling to put the ball in play up and down the lineup.

"I didn't know it was possible to go into such a team hitting slump so early in the season," Norgard said.

The Wildcats nickeled and dimed Darlington on the Redbirds' home diamond Thursday for a run in each of the first three innings, and eventually put up six runs in the top of the seventh.

"We kind of got tired and they took advantage," Norgard said.

Four Wildcats had two or more hits, and Darlington ace Allison Taylor tried to help her cause with two of her team's three hits.
