BRODHEAD - While the Cardinals don't mind the rain, they were evidently eager to get out of it as they dropped a 5-run bomb in the fifth inning during which only one out was recorded.
The big inning propelled Brodhead to a 10-0 walk-off win over Palmyra, evening the Cardinals' Rock Valley record at 1-1.
Leadoff hitter Tia Collins, a freshman outfielder, did her job by singling at the start of the bottom of the fifth before a Taylor Chapman and Courtney Mielke both cracked RBI-singles after a Jordan Riese walk.
Then senior second baseman Paige Hoeper all but put things away with a 2-run double.
Kayla Stampfli was dynamite on the mound. The senior struck out four, walked two and allowed just two hits while her defense was on its toes in committing no errors.
Chapman, a senior catcher, was the only Redbird to collect two hit and drove home three runs. Four of the top five batters for Brodhead scored twice. Both Chapman and the speedy Collins swiped two bases.
Pecatonica 17, Juda 2
The Vikings' battery is fully-charged and its skipper couldn't be less surprised.
The senior duo of Mallory Massey and Molly Dieterich navigated the rain drops to hold Juda to just two runs on three hits as Massey fanned four batters.
Dieterich called a clean game and went 2-for-4 while both seniors scored twice.
"They put in a lot of time together in the offseason," Pecatonica coach Chuck Meyer said. "They're very close on the field and off it and that showed tonight."
Another senior, Ashley Gant, went 2-for-3 and scored four times batting in the cleanup slot. Dana Gilbertson added another pair of hits and crossed the plate three times herself.
Several of the Vikings' runs were the direct result of seven freshman Panthers learning to play together. Junior Tara Allen cracked a double and scored a run for Juda in a losing effort.
