BARABOO - If the Lady Cheesemakers' softball club is going places, they'll have to get there working together. Monday night, Carlie Olsen asked a big favor of the other member of Monroe's outstanding pitching staff.
"I told Renee (Schuttler), 'Please tell coach not to put you in,'" Olsen said.
That's because Olsen was on her way to a 10-0, five-inning no-hitter against Baraboo.
Coach Dale Buvid agreed to leave his hard-throwing starter in and she came through for the first time on the varsity level after throwing two JV no-nos.
"She threw strikes, kept the ball down and our defense made good plays behind her," Buvid said.
"I just never thought it would be possible," Olsen said.
Olsen struck out two and walked two. Her offense hung four runs in the third and another five in the fifth after adding one in the fourth.
Kayla Rackow was one of five Cheesemakers to collect hits. She drove home two of the five runs in the decisive fifth inning.
Thanks to the steady defense behind her, Olsen outdueled Tiffany Stanek, who usually racks up double-digits strikeouts but only had four. Buvid called her the hardest thrower his club had seen, but her defense let her down with six costly errors.
"The bottom line tonight was our defense made plays and theirs did not."
The Thunderbirds, ranked 12th in Division 1, have now dropped three straight games.
"They're just a really good team in a really bad streak right now," Buvid said.
Buvid was hoping to get Schuttler an inning of work, as she'll likely work both ends of today's home doubleheader with Badger South foe Madison Edgewood.
"But we weren't gonna take Carlie out until she gave up a hit," Buvid said.
That opporunity simply never came.
