BELLEVILLE - Brodhead sophomore Erika Stampfli proved that the Cardinals will be a force this softball season, pitching a complete game in an 8-2 season-opening win over Belleville on Thursday night.

Stampfli gave up just one earned run and struck out 15. The Cardinals, who were ranked 12th in the Division 2 Wisconsin Sports Net Fastpitch state poll last year, started strong again this season.

The Cardinals pounded out 11 hits and broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning.

Fellow sophomore Tia Collins led the Cardinals, going 4-for-4, while Brittany Riese was 2-for-4.

MINERAL POINT 35, ALBANY 1

ALBANY - Albany softball coach Connie Wunschel wasn't sure if she'd have enough players to field a softball team until Monday night.

The Comets got off to a tough start with a 35-1 loss to Mineral Point Thursday night.

"We are not the same team we have been before," Wunschel said.

The Comets return just three players from last year and the Pointers pounded out 22 hits.

Albany sophomore Kaitlyn Schulz started and pitched two innings. She gave up 12 hits and walked 12. Albany junior Clare Koopmans pitched three innings and gave up 11 runs on nine hits. She struck out five and walked five.

Wunschel said it's the first time Schulz has pitched in two years.

The Comets (0-1) scored their only run in the fifth inning. Koopmans reached on an error.

Kaley Hubert singled up the middle. KayLee Johnson moved the runners into scoring position with a groundout. Albany junior Abby Kauk delivered an RBI groundout.

The Pointers limited the Comets to just two hits. The Comets struck out just five times.

"For the most part, we made contact," Wunschel said. "I'm not going to say Mineral Point isn't good.

" We are not the same caliber as we have been."
