MADISON - The state tournament runs for Monroe senior Taylor Soddy at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Kevin Kohlstedt and Jess Hager came to an end in the first round.
Soddy lost to Catholic Memorial freshman Tommy Matoska 6-0, 6-3 at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium Thursday, May 30. At No. 1 doubles, Kohlstedt and Hager lost to Altoona's Brady Kaiser and Alex Weber 6-2, 5-7, 10-8.
"We did not have the best day of tennis today," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "The boys were pretty disappointed, but they gave it everything they had and that's all I could ask."
Soddy got behind in the first set and couldn't mount a comeback.
"I think Taylor let nerves get to him in the first set of his match," Saugstad said. "He was just over hitting and wasn't getting into a rhythm. The second set was better, but I know Taylor was disappointed to lose without playing his best tennis. One loss can't take away from all the success Taylor has had in high school though."
After a tough first set, Kohlstedt and Hager won the second set and were tied at 7 in the tiebreaker.
"They weren't keeping enough shots in play and were just a step slow at the net," Saugstad said of Kohlstedt and Hager in the first set. "Jess and Kevin picked it up in the second set and played a solid set where they kept more in play and put more balls away at the net." They "played two tentative points that gave their opponents some easy putaways.
"In a close match like that, sometimes it can come down to just a point or two."
