MADISON - The Monroe tennis team has its top two singles players and No. 1 doubles team still in contention for titles at the Badger Conference Tennis Tournament.
Monroe sophomore Taylor Soddy at No. 1 singles as well as Quinten L'Yvonnet at No. 2 singles and the Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of seniors Carson Root and Garrett Tschanz advanced to the semifinals today after their performances Friday at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
"It should be a good day of tennis," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said Friday looking forward to the semifinals. "I hope Monroe can have its first individual conference champion in the last 10 years."
After receiving a first round bye, Soddy, who is the No. 2 seed, defeated Milton's Sebastian Pizarro-Yanez, 6-3, 6-3. L'Yvonnet, who is the No. 4 seed, received a bye in the first round and then defeated Baraboo's Alex Mann 6-3, 6-3.
"When we got the draw, I thought we may be in trouble in the first round," Saugstad said. "All four of our entries that had matches played against people that had beaten them earlier this season. To win three out of four of those matches was a big boost for the team."
As the No. 2 seed, Root and Tschanz at No. 1 doubles received a first-round bye and then defeated Stoughton's top doubles team 6-4, 6-3.
Monroe's Luke Andraski at No. 3 singles lost to Baraboo's Adam Laux 6-0, 6-1 in the first round. At No. 4 singles, Jared Nix defeated Stoughton's Tanner Kahl in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 for his first varsity win. Nix lost in the second round to Madison Edgewood's Hans Meixelsperser 6-0, 6-4.
"Jared changed up his strategy and started coming to the net in the third set and that sealed the win for him," Saugstad said.
Cristian Noriega and Jess Hager at No. 2 doubles for the Cheesemakers beat Baraboo 6-2, 7-6 (5) and then were defeated by Oregon in three sets 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (5). The Cheesemakers' No. 3 doubles team of Kevin Kohlstedt and Josh Riese defeated Milton in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. In the second round, Kohlstedt and Riese lost to No. 2 seed Sauk Prairie 6-2, 6-3.
Saugstad was impressed with the play of Kohlstedt and Riese at No. 3 doubles.
"They played their best match of the season today," Saugstad said. "The beat Milton to the net, put a lot of balls away, and played with a great deal of energy."
