MONROE - Monroe Avalanche high school hockey players will not be bumping into each other when they are lacing up their skates for games this season with an addition of an upgraded locker room.

The Monroe Youth Hockey Association unveiled its new upgrades to dozens of community members and players during an open house Saturday. The upgrades include an addition to the locker room and a cardio and fitness training area near the new locker room. Joel Fonseca, president of the Monroe Youth Hockey Association, said the upgraded locker room and fitness area are being paid for by donations from a Madison-Milwaukee area construction company, which donated the lumber and labor.

"We have a number of new players this year and the old locker room would have been too small," Fonseca said of the Monroe boys hockey co-op. "They had to increase the size of the locker room."

The cardio and fitness area will include treadmills,

bicycles and weight training.

A warming room has also been added.

"We are always looking to upgrade the facility and give them more of an option to have their physical strength training because that goes hand-in-hand with hockey," Fonseca said.

Fonseca said the upgrades cost about $6,000 to $8,000.

"It looks as nice as it has ever looked," he said. "The response from the community has been great. The highschoolers are excited to see it and are looking forward to the season."

Some of the hockey players' parents and players were painting Saturday.

Monroe sophomore Travis Edmunds, who has played hockey since he was in first grade, was excited with the improvements.

"I think the improvements of the new locker room are great for the freshmen and JV team," Edmunds said. "It will make people realize that Monroe is getting better and exceeding expectations. I think it's awesome. It's a great thing for the Monroe hockey program. In the weight room, we can all work out together. I think it's a great improvement."

In addition to having youth and high school boys hockey games at SLICE, the facility will again host Monroe Blues semi-pro hockey games.

On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays when there are not hockey games scheduled to be played, SLICE offers open skating and has a concession stand.
