MONROE - Six area prep football teams are playoff-bound after the WIAA announced the teams that are in the postseason Friday night.
The six area teams that are in the playoffs are Evansville-Albany (9-0), Darlington (9-0), Pecatonica-Argyle (9-0), Brodhead-Juda (4-5), Black Hawk (6-3) and New Glarus-Monticello (3-6).
Playoff teams were announced Friday, but seeds in eight-team groupings and playoff matchups for the first-round will be released today after coaches have seeding meetings.
Three teams will be vying for No. 1 seeds including Evansville-Albany, Darlington and Pecatonica-Argyle as unbeaten teams and outright conference champions. When asked if Evansville-Albany deserved a No. 1 seed, coach Ron Grovesteen was diplomatic.
"I don't vote," Grovesteen said. "The other teams vote. Whatever they vote that is how it is. I don't know what else you can do."
Pecatonica-Argyle, which is expected to compete in the Division 6 playoffs, could earn a No. 1 seed. The Vikings may get a No. 1 seed, but they could be grouped in the same eight-team field as Darlington. Darlington is ranked No. 1 in the WisSports.net Division 6 Coaches poll and Pecatonica-Argyle is ranked No. 2.
"We deserve a No. 1 or No. 2 seed regardless of what grouping we are in," Pecatonica-Argyle coach Larry Green said. "If we are in a different grouping than Darlington we could argue for a No. 1 seed."
Brodhead-Juda made the playoffs for the 25th straight year, which is second longest streak in the state behind Menomonie.
"That (making the playoffs) is always our first goal," Brodhead-Juda coach B.J. Bockhop said. "No senior group wants to be the one that snaps that streak."
Bockhop anticipates the Cardinals may go west in the eight-team groupings.
"I think there is a good chance that we could go west, and we may play Platteville if they beat Lancaster," Bockhop said.
Platteville defeated Lancaster 28-26 Friday night.
Brodhead-Juda shared the Rock Valley South Conference championship with Big Foot, Clinton and Beloit Turner. However, the Cardinals have the tiebreaker in the conference championship formula. Both the Cardinals and Chiefs finished 2-1 against the other conference co-champions, but Brodhead-Juda has the tiebreaker since they beat Big Foot.
"I would like to think as a conference champion we would get a home playoff game," Bockhop said.
