Singles hold the Fort against Cheesemakers

MONROE - Monroe's girls tennis team was singled out by Fort Atkinson at a home meet Thursday.

The Cheesemakers won all three of their doubles matches, but lost all four singles matchups in a 4-3 loss. Monroe had defeated Fort Atkinson by the same score earlier this season.

"Our doubles players have once again played very aggressive matches against their opponents," head coach Stephanie Miller said.

Ellie Shuda lost in three sets as Monroe's No. 2 player.

"(She) played a tremendous match," Miller said.

Miranda Henke also played well, but lost in two sets, serving as Monroe's No. 4 singles player. Henke moved up from junior-varsity after McKenzie Bruce hurt her knee earlier in the season.

"We had to move all of our singles up. Kiera Berger moved into the No. 3 spot and Miranda took over the fourth spot," Miller said.

Berger lost in two sets, yet managed to make a bit of a comeback in the second before dropping the match.

Kristin McArdle played a great match as Monroe's top singles player. The sophomore played many games into deuce before her eventual loss.

"This entire match was fought very hard as a team," Miller said.

Monroe hosts Monona Grove on Monday in a remake match. On Tuesday, the team travels to Madison Edgewood. Then on Thursday, Sept. 18, the Cheesemakers continue their busy week when they host Stoughton.
