MONONA - The Monroe High School baseball team had an opportunity to challenge Monona Grove on Friday, but the Silver Eagles knocked off the Cheesemakers 7-3.

Monroe senior Hogan Edwards pitched 51⁄3 innings and gave up four earned runs on nine hits. He struck out seven and walked two.

"Early on, Hogan was up in the zone," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "It allowed him to work deeper into the count. He didn't have his best stuff. Give Monona Grove credit. They put the ball in play and hit it hard."

Edwards went 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Cheesemakers at the plate.

Monroe (5-12, 2-7 Badger South) had a golden scoring opportunity in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and one out. However, the Cheesemakers managed to score just one run.

"We just didn't get a big hit," Huffman said. "We are still lacking that big hit."

With the Silver Eagles leading 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cheesemakers had a error in right field that allowed two runs to score and the Silver Eagles took a four-run lead. The Cheesemakers committed three errors in the game.

Monroe senior Jacob Ritschard pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up no runs on two hits.

Monroe will host a rescheduled game at 12:30 p.m. today against Evansville.
