WISCONSIN RAPIDS - Pecatonica-Argyle senior Elise Sigg envisioned setting a state record at the WIAA Division 3 state meet.

In a historic 4,000-meter race, Sigg delivered, breaking a previous state record and finishing fourth in 14 minutes, 55 seconds. University Lake freshman Molly Seidel set a blistering pace, winning the state title in 14:37.

Sigg, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit, now has the fourth fastest time in the history of the Division 3 state meet.

"I thought about setting a state record," Sigg said. "In two years, I can't ask for anything better. Of course, I was hoping to do better and place higher. I ran my hardest."

Pecatonica-Argyle coach Pat Hardyman said Sigg's time, which was 21 seconds faster than last year, would have won state any other year.

"She was gunning for a state title," Hardyman said. "Certainly, with the way she has been running this year that was the expectation.

"To have two state appearances and to win two state medals, that's an accomplishment. She's definitely one of the fastest distance runners in the state. She goes out as the best distance runner I have ever coached."

Darlington finished eighth overall with 217 points. The Redbirds were led by senior Hana Miehe, who took 14th place with a time of 16:02. Despite being ranked as one of the top two teams most of the year, the Redbirds didn't feel any extra pressure.

"The rankings don't really mean anything to us," Miehe said. "Once a team gets here, they can win. My goal was just to do better than last year."

Darlington junior Olivia Wedig finished 63rd with a time of 16:48, and freshman Amy Jorgenson took 76th in 17:03. Sophmore Taryn Evenstad took 87th with a time of 17:10.

"It seemed everybody had their Achilles' heel," Darlington coach Arnie Miehe said. "Somebody didn't have a fifth; they didn't have a first. You knew that it was just a matter of how it was going to fall."

Albany freshman Jessica Mauerman finished 54th with a time of 16:40.
