SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk senior Aleigha Sigafus will go down in the record books after scoring a single-game school-record 39 points to lift the Warriors to a 64-58 overtime win over Darlington in a girls basketball season opener Tuesday.
Black Hawk's previous single-game scoring record was held by Jen Wellnitz, who plays basketball at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Angie Butler.
Sigafus finished with a double-double, also grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with three steals. She made 15 of 19 free throws including 6 of 7 in overtime to seal the win as the Warriors outscored the Redbirds 12-6 in the extra session.
"She had a great all-around game," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said of Sigafus. "Aleigha was pretty persistent and our perimeter players did a good job of getting her the ball in spots. Hopefully, it's a sign of better things to come."
Black Hawk senior Brooke Moore scored nine points, and junior Sam Lovelace added eight points. The Warriors made 23 of 33 free throws as a team. The Warriors made about two times more free throws than the Redbirds shot (13).
"It came down to free throws," Flanagan said. "It's something we wanted to make a point of emphasis this year. I don't think we got to the line nearly enough last year. The team I coached last year would not have won a game like this. I think it says a lot about the seniors. They put everything on the line."
Darlington junior Callie Norton scored a team-high 20 points, and junior Taryn Rankin had 12 points.
Brodhead 75, Oregon 64
OREGON - Brodhead senior Kylie Moe scored a game-high 31 points and the Cardinals lived at the free-throw line.
Oregon employed a 1-2-2 press and, with a lot of fouls, Brodhead reached the double bonus midway through the first half. Brodhead made 39 of 51 free throws.
"We knew they would come out and press us," Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said. "For the most part, we went out there and knocked down free throws. We made (76) percent which is pretty good for a high school team."
Brodhead senior Amber Pickel scored 16 points, and sophomore Erin Nyhus added 15 points. Junior teammate Morgan Cook chipped in 11 points.
Oregon stayed close in the first half with senior Leah Koopman, who had a team-high 23 points, getting several offensive rebounds and second-chance scoring opportunities. The Cardinals led 42-39 at the half. The Panthers battled back to take a seven-point lead in the second half.
"We were giving them second-chance opportunities and when you do that they will hurt you," Kammerer said. "We played better defense in the second half and limited their second chances."
Juda 31,
Faith Christian 2
WILLIAMS BAY - Juda junior Chelsea Burkhalter and sophomore Hailey Kammerer each scored eight points to lead the Panthers.
"I was not expecting a game like that," Juda coach Curt Brown said. "It was kind of a muddled ball. I think we kind of had some of the first-game rust as far as shooting goes. We struggled getting into a rhythm and an offensive flow. That is something we will have to improve on for Thursday."
Juda shot just 36.3 percent from the free-throw line (8 of 22).
