SHULLSBURG - The Pecatonica baseball team committed four errors, struggled to come up with a big hit and lost its first game of the season 3-1 to Shullsburg-Benton on Monday.
Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said the four errors caused a couple of runs to score.
"Offensively, we have been in a funk the last couple of games," Strommen said. "We haven't been as aggressive at the plate. We have been letting the pitcher dictate to us, and we have been getting behind in the count. They outplayed us and were the more aggressive team."
Pecatonica drops to 17-1 overall and 11-1 in the Six Rivers East.
Pecatonica sophomore Carter Ruegsegger started and pitched four innings. He gave up two runs on eight hits, struck out one, walked none and hit one. Junior Evan Prust tossed two innings in relief and gave up one run on two hits and struck out two.
Trailing 2-0 after four innings, the Vikings pushed across one run in the fifth. Senior Logan Green and sophomore Colton Schraepfer both singled. Green later scored on an error to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Vikings were limited to just five hits. Senior A.J. Hendrickson had a double in the sixth, but Pecatonica didn't score.
Pecatonica will host Cassville on Friday.
"We just have to let this game go and work on some things," Strommen said. "We have three straight days of practice to work on some things out. We have to have a better mental approach to the game than we did tonight."
