MONROE - The Monroe High School boys soccer team suffered some injuries and lost a heartbreaker to Jefferson in a double shootout in the championship game of the Monroe quadrangular on Saturday at Honey Creek Park.

The game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, both teams scored four goals in the first shootout and then Jefferson clipped the Cheesemakers 4-3 in the second shootout.

Monroe junior goalie Deven Schulte strained his quadriceps in the Cheesemakers' 3-1 win over Richland Center in the first game and then both sophomore Alex Barradas and junior Jahor Valentin suffered ankle injuries in the opening minutes against Jefferson.

"I was really worried about Jefferson's speed and experience," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "Jefferson is a really physical team. We had some of our younger guys in with not much experience and they really stepped up. They played well."

Monroe junior Victor Vasquez scored a goal on a penalty kick at 25 minutes, 36 seconds. Jefferson tied the game at 54:14 on Samuel Aguirre's penalty kick goal to force the first shootout.

The Cheesemakers got goals from sophomore Aaron Ziolkowski, junior Daniel Lapp, Valentin and Barradas in the first shootout to tie Jefferson at 4. In the second shootout, the Cheesemakers (1-1-2) got goals from junior Matt Carter, sophomore Julio Vasquez and junior Nick Benkert, but Jefferson scored four goals to pull out the win.

Monroe goalie Aidan Lambert had 13 saves against Jefferson.

Ziolkowski scored two goals to propel the Cheesemakers past Richland Center.

Barradas scored the first goal on an assist from Valentin at 18:06. Ziolkowski scored his first goal on an assist from Lapp at 28:20 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead.

Richland Center scored a goal in the second half at 35:30 to cut the Cheesemakers' lead to 2-1. It didn't take long for the Cheesemakers to answer. Ziolkowski scored his second goal on a pass by Benkert to give the Cheesemakers a two-goal lead at 44:09.

"Our defense was very good the whole game and all day," Vasquez said. "Our defense was a lot better."

Schulte had six saves against Richland Center. After Schulte strained his quad, Vasquez wanted to play it safe.

"He could have probably played the rest of the day, but we just wanted him to rest. We knew he wasn't able to kick it," Vasquez said.
