Severson key to leading Vikings

ARGYLE - With 22 golfers out, including three returning varsity members, Pec-Argyle golf coach Chris Holcomb is hopeful that his team can improve on last season's fifth place finish in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League.

Christopher Severson, Jacob Melvin, and Zach Schilling all return to varsity for Pec-Argyle this season. Severson was the top golfer for P-A last year, averaging a 40. Holcomb believes that Severson has got mentally stronger from last season.

"He's definitely gotten a better fix on how to focus in a meet, especially with Cuba City being the state champs, getting to play against them every meet," Holcomb said. "I can see that really helping get in that zone. I expect Christopher to medal at least one meet this year. He's definitely motivated this year."

Pec-Argyle must replace two graduated seniors, but Holcomb has no shortage of golfers to choose from for those fourth and fifth spots.

"The four and five spots are gonna be kind of a battle," he said. "We have 22 kids out this year. It's quite a pool. There are some that have never golfed competitively before. We have eight or nine that played JV last year."

Holcomb said one area his team really needs to improve is in the mental side of golf.

"One thing we need to improve is mental focus at matches when things kind of go awry," he said. "Just focusing on the next shot and forgetting the last shot. I think that's one of the hardest parts for high school kids."

As for the SWAL, Holcomb named Cuba City as the favorite to win conference.

"Cuba City's gonna have a good team again. They're bringing back a good core that ran through the tournament last year," he said. "Southwestern will have a good team. Other than that, I'm not really sure."

With the rest of the conference being fairly unsettled, Holcomb thinks his team could take a step up.

"I hope we can move up in the conference. I have good expectations for them," he said. "If we can ever get winter to go away we'll see what happens. We've got some young talent that haven't played competitive golf yet. I'm pretty excited about this season."
