MADISON - Monroe senior Silas Setterstrom finished fourth place at the Badger Conference tennis tournament Saturday at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Oregon's Calvin Schneider, the top seed at No. 1 singles, defeated Setterstrom 6-1, 6-3 in a semifinal match. In a third-place match, Monona Grove's Cole Lindwall beat Setterstrom in three sets 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (8). Setterstrom took a 6-5 lead in the third set, but Lindwall battled back for the victory.
"Silas jumped out with a really strong start," Monroe coach Matt Bordner said of the third-place match against Lindwall. "He took the first set and was really able to capitalize on some early errors from Lindwall. Lindwall found his stroke in the second set. The final set was quite a battle. Lindwall was able to force a tiebreaker and did just enough to beat Silas."
It marks the first time Setterstrom has finished in the top four at No. 1 singles in the conference tournament.
"It was really an impressive effort by Silas and we're really proud of how hard he fought and his resilience throughout the match," Bordner said. "He's such a great kid and I think he really turned some heads today in terms of how well he competed with some of the top guys in the conference."
