STOUGHTON - The Monroe boys tennis team had two singles and one doubles team finish in the top four at the Stoughton Invitationah on Saturday.
Milton won the eight-team team title over Sauk Prairie. Monroe finished sixth, but Monroe coach Matt Bordner was excited with the improvements the team has made.
"This was the best tennis our team has played this season," Bordner said.
Monroe senior Silas Setterstrom finished second at No. 1 singles. Setterstrom defeated Jefferson's Blake Drays 6-0, 6-0 and cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sauk Prairie's Noah Wankerl. In the championship match, Oregon's Calvin Schneider beat Setterstrom 6-2, 6-0.
"Silas had a really strong showing in the singles bracket," Bordner said. "He handled his first two opponents with ease and then had a tough match with Schneider from Oregon in the championship. Schneider really turned it on in the championship, but I was proud of how hard Silas played him."
Monroe senior Nick Baumann went 2-1 in the invitational to take fifth place. Baumann defeated Cole Frederick 6-3, 6-2. Oregon's Charles Donovan then defeated Baumann 6-0, 6-0. Baumann bounced back to knock off Milton's Garrett Masterson in three sets 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-2.
The No. 2 doubles team of seniors Ross Oxenrider and Jacob Kind finished fourth. Oxenrider and Kind defeated Oregon's Garrett Schulz and Sean Benet in three sets 6-0, 4-6, 10-7. Stoughton's Jet Matterson and Jonathon Blaikie defeated the Monroe No. 2 doubles tandem in three sets 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-4. Big Foot's Beau Cary and Christian Karabas beat Oxenrider and Kind in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 10-7.
"Jake Kind and Ross Oxenrider started out with a big win against Oregon's No. 2 doubles, which I think surprised most people at the invite," Bordner said. "They had two other close matches, but were unable to pull them off."
The other doubles team that finished in the top seven was the No. 1 doubles team of Alex Tordoff and Ryan Peterson who took seventh. Milton's Sean Harvatine and Miles Stuckey beat Tordoff and Peterson in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 10-4. Oregon's top doubles team of Sean Dychowsky and Kyle Rehrauer defeated Tordoff and Peterson 6-0, 6-0. Tordoff and Peterson bounced back to knock off Jefferson's Matthew Thompson and Mason Lindemoen 6-1, 6-1.
