MADISON - Monroe High School junior Maggie Setterstrom won two matches Friday at the Badger Conference tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium and will play in the No. 2 singles semifinals today.

The Cheesemakers won three first-round matches to score eight points on the first day of the two-day event. Madison Edgewood leads 12 other teams with 28 points. Monroe is tied for eighth.

"Overall, this was a pretty good day for us," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "I was hoping for four first-round wins, and we came very close to that."

As the No. 4 seed at No. 2 singles, Setterstrom opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Baraboo's Beth Deyo. Then she outlasted Milton's Kylie Robinson 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4 in a three-hour match.

"These were two evenly matched players, and the whole match it was back and forth" Saugstad said. "Milton's girl was more of a baseline player, and I believe Maggie's ability to come to the net was really what won her the match."

Setterstrom faces Jessica Inman, the top seed from Edgewood, in the semifinals.

At No. 1 singles, Monroe freshman Grace Tostrud recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Baraboo's Tate Bates in the first round.

"Grace started very aggressively and was hitting strong groundstrokes and approach shots," Saugstad said. "Grace got a little tentative toward the end of the match but started playing aggressively at the end to wrap up the match."

Tostrud then fell to Stoughton's Sarah Benoy 6-0, 6-0.

"In the second round, Grace had to play the No. 1 seed and defending conference champion from Stoughton," Saugstad said. "Grace played as well as she could, but this girl is probably one of the top 16 players in the state and just had too much power on her shots for Grace to consistently handle."

The Cheesemakers also got a win from Parris Bunker and Sam Huizenga at No. 2 doubles. The duo defeated a Fort Atkinson team 6-1, 6-0 before falling to the No. 2 seed from Edgewood 6-0, 6-2.

In other first-round matches Friday:

Jensen Christensen lost to Sauk Prairie's Katie Yanke 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles;

Skye Allen fell to Oregon's Rachell Depuydt 2-6, 6-4 (10-7) at No. 4 singles;

Ashley Placek and Hallie Signer lost 6-2, 6-0 to a Milton team at No. 1 doubles; and

Monroe's Liz Skatrud and Kiara Miller lost 6-2, 6-2 to a Monona Grove team at No. 3 doubles.
