SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk seniors Isaac Sigafus and Kyle Stauffacher showed no ill effects from an 18-day layoff between wrestling meets.

Sigafus (119 pounds) and Stauffacher (145) both notched pins in impressive matches in their first meet of 2010. Black Hawk dropped a dual meet to River Ridge-Cassville 42-31 Tuesday night, after forfeiting five of the 14 weight classes.

Sigafus pinned River Ridge-Cassville freshman Nick Wachter in 58 seconds.

"It didn't have any effect," Sigafus said of the long layoff between matches. "We were practicing almost every day over break except for New Year's. I was pretty much ready to go. I wanted to do good in front of the home crowd. I just got pumped."

Stauffacher was just as impressive after pinning Leigh Jentz in the final varsity match in 4:39.

"He's a very good wrestler," Stauffacher said. "I guess I just caught him when he was trying to do a move and it worked out for me."

Stauffacher dismissed the notion that the layoff between wrestling meets was a factor.

"We all felt strong," he said. "We worked hard over break to keep in good condition."

Despite five forfeits by Black Hawk, the Warriors still had a chance to win the dual meet. The Warriors trailed River Ridge-Cassville 36-25 with two matches left. The Warriors could have won the meet with two pins in the final two matches.

The conditioning of Black Hawk wrestlers was on display in junior Bryant Luhman's match at 171 pounds where he pulled out a nail-biting 10-8 overtime win over River Ridge-Cassville senior Peter Myers. Luhman carried a 7-6 lead over Myers into the third period. Luhman opened the third period with an escape to take an 8-6 lead. Myers battled back to tie it at 8 to force overtime. Luhman won it in the extra period on a takedown.

"Conditioning paid off there," Seffrood said. "It's a lot of work out there for seven minutes."

Black Hawk senior Tyler Quinn and sophomore Patrick Mahoney switched weight classes for the meet. Mahoney at 189 was pinned by Shea Esser in 2:59. Quinn at 215 defeated Lucas Kinyon 14-2 for a major decision.

Black Hawk freshman Korey Costa (135) and senior Grant Roper (160) received wins via forfeits.

Seffrood likes having the flexibility of being able to shuffle Quinn and Mahoney at 189 pounds and 215 pounds depending on the meet.

"It's nice both of them can stay at 189. It allows me to move them back and forth," Seffrood said.

Black Hawk will wrestle in the Northeast Invitational at Goose Lake, Iowa, Saturday.
