MONROE - There are some springs when baseball and softball players have to take turns shoveling snow off their fields and basepaths.

Coaches for Monroe High School don't expect spring weather to wreak havoc and delay the season openers for their baseball and softball teams this year.

Monroe baseball coach Dustin Huffman said the baseball field doesn't have any frost remaining, but it could use more time to dry up.

"Unless we get a bunch of snow or rain, I can't imagine not being out on our field for the first game April 1," Huffman said.

That's when the Monroe baseball team is slated to take on Lena-Winslow in its season opener.

Huffman said he hopes to get the Cheesemakers on the field for a couple of practices this week.

"We have had some years when we get out on the field for the first time it's our first game," Huffman said. "That is not ideal. This is an important opener for us against Lena-Winslow because it's our one and only chance for a game before our first conference game against Madison Edgewood."

Monroe hosts Edgewood on April 5.

"Lena-Winslow starts about one month ahead of us," Huffman said. 'They will have five or six games in before we play our first game. Hopefully, we can get outside so we can make it a competitive game."

The National Weather Service is forecasting one-quarter to one-half inch of precipitation during the day Wednesday with a high temperature of 40 degrees and winds of 15 to 20 mph that could gust up to 30. Another one-half to three-quarters inch of precipitation is forecast for Wednesday night and there's a chance of snow Thursday.

Monroe softball coach Dale Buvid understands that in the spring teams are at the mercy of the weather. There are some springs where the athletic director's email out-box is swamped with messages of games being postponed and rescheduled.

Buvid said in his 33 years of coaching he can only recall playing a season-opening softball game in March several times.

The Monroe softball team is in Florida this week for two practices, a scrimmage and two regular-season games. The weather is part of the reason Buvid schedules the Florida trip for the softball team every other year.

"Softball-wise the weather is a lot better," Buvid said. "We get a chance to get outside in nice conditions. There is only so much you can do in a gym. You can get a jump on other teams."

The Monroe softball team is scheduled to play its first game in Wisconsin on March 31 at Milton, which also is a Badger South Conference rival. The Cheesemakers want to hit the ground running and by that first game in Wisconsin, Buvid hopes his team has two games and a scrimmage in the sun under its belt.
