Schliem, Pecatonica gain split

BLANCHARDVIILLE - A stellar relief effort by freshman Drew Schliem on Friday allowed the Pecatonica baseball team to eke out a 5-4 victory in the opener of a doubleheader against Highland.

The Cardinals returned the favor in the nightcap, posting a 7-6 victory to earn the split.

Schliem allowed no hits over the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win in relief in the opener.

In the second game, Highland scored four times in the first inning to grab an early lead, then added three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.

The Vikings rallied with five runs in the fourth to get to within 7-5. Another run in the sixth made it a one-run game at 7-6, but the Vikings couldn't come up with a tying run.

Junior Geoff Daley went 3-for-3 and senior Mitch Steinhoff was 2-for-3 for the Vikings (9-10, 7-8 Six Rivers East).

Cassville 13, Argyle 2

ARGYLE - Freshman Brock Breuhlman went 2-for-3 with a triple, senior Kevin Flannery went 2-for-3, and freshman Kyle Olson went 2-for-4 to lead the Orioles (2-16), who were competitive in the second game of a doubleheader loss.

MONTICELLO - The Ponies had the same number of errors as hits in the doubleheader loss: seven.

Potosi set the tone by scoring three runs in the first inning of the opener on only one hit.

Monticello (4-17) received a solid start from Bryce Klitzke in the nightcap. The junior scattered five hits over six innings, allowing five earned runs. He struggled with his control, issuing eight walks.
