MADISON - Darlington senior Naomi Black will go down as the answer to a trivia question when it comes to the girls golf program.

The question: who is the only girls golfer to be a two-time state qualifier in the history of the school?

Black, battle several sand traps during the day, shot a 93 in the second round of the WIAA Division 2 state tournament to finish 22nd.

Osceola's Casey Danielson won the state championship after shooting a 73 and finishing with a 139 at the two-day tournament. Edgerton's Brooke Ferrell took second (153).

Darlington-Cuba City coach Gary Ringen was proud of Black's performance among that group.

"She is in pretty elite company to be 22nd in Division 2," Ringen said. "Those are the best golfers in the state."

Black shot a 48 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine. She hit six shots into sand traps on the front nine.

"It was just a nightmare," Ringen said. "The pins were pretty tough today. She did her best. She hit out of the sand traps with no problems each time. It added a stroke or two to her score."

She started on No. 10 and hit a shot into the sand trap. She had a par on No. 18 to begin a string of four straight pars.

Black plans to go to Northwestern University in Minnesota where she will major in music. She is also considering golfing in college.

"She really had a good high school run," Ringen said.
