STOUGHTON - The Badger Conference swimming meet was just the first test for the Monroe girls swimming team in the championship season.

The Cheesemakers finished eighth in the Badger South with 103 points. Milton, ranked No. 2 in the Division 2 Wisconsin Swim Coaches Association poll, won the conference meet 483-349 over Fort Atkinson. Monroe senior Rachel Root finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 14.52 seconds. Root also took third in the 100 backstroke (59.80). It was just 0.13 seconds away from her season best time.

"Milton is in our sectional," Root said. "They always push you to go faster. I felt pretty good with how I swam. It's weird because it's my last conference meet."

Monroe coach Linda Moser said there were many swimmers who set personal records at the meet.

"When you look at the scoreboard your heart is kind of heavy," Moser said. "When you go back and look at the times the girls swam it's really good. For them to PR and improve with the same workout and no taper, it's great. We have a lot of work ahead of us for sectional."

The 400 freestyle relay team of Root, Sarah Kind, Angie Beaver and Briana Katzenberger finished the race with a time of 4:00.93.

"We were aiming to break 4," Moser said. "It just didn't work out that way."

Beaver set a PR in the 100 backstroke (1:09.78) and Anika Nelson set a PR in the 500 freestyle (6:23).

"She hasn't been feeling the greatest," Moser said of Nelson. "She came through with a PR."

Corlissa Robertson had a PR in the 100 breaststroke (1:26) and Mackenzie Hesgard had a PR in the 100 breaststroke (1:30.03). Kind teamed with Beaver, Katzenberger and Anna Meritt to finish 10th in the 200 freestyle relay with a PR time of 1:52.58.

Monroe will swim at the WIAA Division 2 Baraboo sectional on Saturday, Nov. 3.

"The goal is to take time off," Root said. "This week we will work hard at the beginning of the week so we can get to where we need to be at the end of the week."
