Roelli delivers in 8th for Redbirds

DARLINGTON - The Darlington High School softball team pulled out a 15-14 eight-inning win over New Glarus in the season opener on Tuesday.

Darlington junior Reagan Roelli hit a walkoff RBI double in the eighth inning to give the Redbirds a thrilling win. Roelli's hit capped a four-run eighth for the Redbirds who stormed back from a seven-run deficit. Darlington freshman Bethany McDonald also had a key two-run single up the middle in the eighth.

Darlington junior Tayah Paulson went 3-for-4 with five RBI, two doubles and one triple to lead the Redbirds.

"I'm so proud of these ladies for never giving up," Darlington coach Karen Bennett said. "They kept their heads and pulled out a win. It's a nice way to start the season."

Darlington and New Glarus were locked in a tie game at 4 going into the sixth inning. The Glarner Knights exploded for seven runs in the sixth to take an 11-4 lead. However, the Knights couldn't slam the door on the Redbirds.

Darlington scored two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh. Paulson's two-run triple forced extra innings.

New Glarus junior Ashley Judd went 3-for-5 with a triple. New Glarus senior Noelle Austin went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Both junior Lydia Sprecher and senior Jessica Van Dusen were 2-for-4.

The Knights committed four errors, and the Redbirds had three errors.
