MONROE - Sophomore Cammi Ganshert had an assist on the first goal of the game, and the Rock County Fury girls hockey co-op skated to a 5-0 win over the Lakeshore Lightning of Cedarburg Tuesday at SLICE Arena.
It was the first game the Fury had played in Monroe. The Fury will play another game this season at SLICE on Feb. 4.
For Ganshert, the experience brought back a flood of memories from playing youth hockey.
"It's kind of like a flashback of being really young," said Ganshert of her home ice in Monroe. "It's nice to be out there with this team that I enjoy so much, too. It's nice we came out here (Monroe) just for me because I'm the only one from Monroe now."
The Fury outshot the Lakeshore Lightning 52-11.
The Fury (4-1-1, 1-0-1 Badger Conference) scored three goals in the second period to break the game open. Fury senior forward Bailey Cronin scored a goal on assists by Mya Maslonka and Ganshert 1 minute, 39 seconds into the second period. About 2 minutes later, junior forward Zoie Steig scored a goal on an assist from Ally Burke to give the Fury a 2-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Senior Meghan McCarthy scored a goal on passes from Cronin and Burke to give the Fury an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
"We controlled the puck in their zone the first period, but we just couldn't put one in," Ganshert said. "It felt good to get that assist. It made me feel more confident the rest of the game. We certainly got on a roll from there."
The Fury were coming off a 9-0 loss to the top-ranked Central Wisconsin Storm on Friday.
"That was our worst loss in my two years of coaching," Rock County Fury coach Dave Soddy said. "I told the girls the key is how you deal with adversity. We talked in the locker room that we had to beat them (Lakeshore) to the loose pucks and once we got one in it would open the floodgates."
The Fury also has players from Beloit Memorial, Beloit Turner, Janesville Craig, Janesville Parker, Milton and Madison Memorial.
