MILTON - Megan Roberts threw seven complete innings to earn a 5-1 softball win Thursday over Milton for the Cheesemakers (2-0, 1-0 Badger South).
"It was a great-played softball game, especially for this early in the season," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said.
Roberts struck out six, while holding Milton to just four hits and no walks.
Milton scored its only run in the fifth inning. Monroe finally crossed the board in the top of the sixth, and added four runs in the seventh.
"(Milton's) pitcher is outstanding. Give our kids credit. They hit a really good pitcher late in the game," Buvid said.
In the sixth inning, Monroe senior Emily Rufenacht reached on an error and then was sacrificed to second. She stole third and scored on a wild pitch to tie the score.
"She's a heck of a player and can really use her speed well," Buvid said of Rufenacht. "That pitcher had only thrown one changeup all game, and it froze Brandi Trewartha. Against Kendra Clark, she let it go wild."
In the seventh, Kelsey Erickson reached base and Kristin McArdle advanced her. Coree Lee hit a ball up he middle, scoring Erickson.
Paisley Bennett and Maggie Schuttler each had hits in the inning and Rufenacht had an RBI groundout.
Monroe plays two games this afternoon, and again Saturday, in a Freeport tournament.
