MADISON - Meghan Roberts etched her name into the Monroe softball record book Thursday. The senior struck out 10 hitters on her way to a no-hitter in Monroe's 9-0 win over conference rival Madison Edgewood.
"It was a very nice performance by Meghan," head coach Dale Buvid said. "She faced only 22 batters - one more than the minimum. That's pretty good."
Roberts, who didn't issue a walk, lost the perfect game in the top of the third inning when the leadoff hitter bunted and reached on an error. Buvid said the only perfect game in Monroe history belongs to Amy Bahler back in the early half of this decade.
At the plate Thursday, the Cheesemakers struggled early before succeeding late.
"We kept getting hits with two outs early on, but couldn't get the big one. We had five hits through the first four innings," Buvid said.
The bats finally arrived in the fifth inning. Kristin McArdle led off with a hit and pinch hitter Coree Lee reached on an error. Later, Paisley Bennett, Maggie Schuttler, and Emily Rufenacht came up with hits to score four of the inning's six runs. Monroe batted around, with McArdle's sacrifice fly bringing in the sixth run.
The top four hitters in Monroe's order had 11 of the team's 16 hits.
But it was Roberts' dominance that was the talk of the game.
"We like to talk about presence on the mound, and right now Meghan is really proving herself," Buvid said. "I'm really happy for her, too. Last year she was behind a second-team all-state pitcher and had to wait her turn. She's worked hard and is getting quicker and better every game. And her riseball is really starting to upset batters."
Monroe remained undefeated in conference play.
